Multifunctional hall, Csepel
Completed
2023

I have been dealing with the run-down, but beautiful, industrial building located adjacent to the main road of the Csepel factory quarter since 2020. Covering an area of 1600 square metres, the three-nave shed-roof, brick façade industrial hall was originally constructed as a ground-floor building. It was built in the 1910s, as part of the first phase of construction of the Manfréd Weiss Works. Two bays of the hall are certainly original; the third has been damaged to such an extent that we no longer consider it an original structure. The façades of the original building, in keeping with the construction practices of the times, boast exposed brick architecture with a characteristic, simple brick decoration. The façade has been rebuilt so many times that none of the original fenestration remains today. The wooden structure of the shed roof was in very poor condition, in certain parts posing risks of serious bodily injury. In recent years, we have produced a number of concept designs, demolition plans, plans for the reconstruction of the support structure as well as construction plans for the roof framing and the roofing. At present, plans call for the building to first receive new roof framing and roofing, and only thereafter would a new function for the edifice be determined; this is not an impossible feat, but it is an unusual approach. The original hall, with a roof framing using joists, had approx. 5.6 metres of useful interior structural headroom in the hall; according to the design program, the desired structural headroom currently is 6.5 metres. The roof framing, with its adjoining structures, and the roofing was completed in 2023.
