Family house, Budapest, XIII. district
Completed
2018

This residential house is located on a former 19th-century industrial site that had been taken over for inner-city residential developments ages ago. This small building was once the gatehouse of the City’s gaslight utility company, with its larger neighbor serving as a lamplight dormitory. Dilapidated and its original function long gone, the tiny abode stood virtually unnoticed in the city's heart. My task was to transform the building and its yard into an intimate setting, one that is perfect for a family with three kids. It only has a ground floor and an attic, but next to it are multiple-storey condominiums with 80 to 100 units each. Even on its plot, there is a significantly larger condo. In such an environment, a small-footprint detached house is a striking contrast. I was only involved in concept planning, with the peculiar request that a three-bedroom ‘aura capsule’ be suspended indoors. The new home has been finished and is in use. While I am sorry to see its 19th-century charm gone, it is refreshing that such a wacky and absurd idea could be realized.
