Family house, Budatétény
Completed
2023

We designed this unusual residential building in a special nook of Budapest’s District 22 (Budatétény), near the Háros Island. The area includes only a handful of streets and is set off from the floodplain forest of the Danube bank by a tall circle levee. A guard tower is situated on the streetside boundary of the plot; we understand it was used in the early 20th century to monitor cargo traffic on the Danube and to notify rapid-reaction units in the case of smuggling. The tower was built out of soft limestone blocks; we have renovated it and are preserving it. We are also keeping the more significant part of the load-bearing structure of the building situated behind the tower, adjoining the neighboring edifice by a firewall. Still, we are also planning a significant expansion here. The three-story, narrow tower comprises the living spaces; behind it, in a stocky but uniquely upward-oriented building with a high-pitched roof, are the community spaces of the family home. We have added neutral white cubes to the composition, which support the vertical emphases. We received approval of the plans for this complex building in spring 2023. The house was finished in 2024.
