Reconstruciton facade, Budapest, József boulevard 31/b

2018

Budapest, District 8, Palace Quarter. Built in 1893 according to the designs of Péter Meyer, this enormous tenement building occupies a plot marked by three streets and is one of the dominant structures along József körút. Such island-like residential buildings are few and far between across the city. Referred to by mailmen as József körút 31/b, the building’s side facades (Kölcsey utca 1 and Békési utca 2) still exhibit traces of the original permit plan dated in 1893, with which its front facade has very little left in common. Photographs taken after construction have recently been discovered, confirming that the completed building was much more modest than what the original blueprints had projected. The remaining facade plan clearly reveals the designer’s initial intent in emulating a level of partition and ornamentation only seen on the facade of the Drechsler Palace. Following a rather lengthy planning procedure, the Condo Board eventually agreed to renovate the building according to its current design, even though the ground floor section will be restored to its original beauty. Works have not yet commenced.
